Qing Dynasty

The Beginning of Qian DynastyThe Ming Dynasty was beggining to be falling apart, people were starving, ineffective rulers, corruption in officials and governement. There was limited power in the Dynasty itself. Tension of the Civil War and Rebellion rises. Outside the wall, Manchuria, a different region of China, stood a leader. Manchus was the leader took control Ming Dynasty when it was in the tipping point. He was made the emperor and changes the name of the new Dynasty to Qian Dynasty. They ruled for 260 years expanding to Taiwan, Mogolia and Central Asia.

Chinese Under Qing DynastyThe chinese were inferior to the Manchus which causes tension of the new rule, but they slowly gained trust their new emperor. Manchus started to support Confucius belief and social structure. They slowly restored and made the frontiers to be safer. Kangxi, the next emperor was made the emperor for 60 years, He helped the economy by reducing government expenses and also lowered taxes.Kangxi was also a a scholar and patron of the arts. He gained the support from offering people government positions. He enjoyed the company of the "Jesuits" at court.They update him with the situation in Europe. His grandson Qian-long, who ruled from 1736 to 1795, he expanded China to its greatest size. He was like his grandfather, he often take the time to work on the empire’s problems. Some problems would included Raids on their borders and the expanding of European missionaries and merchants in China.

Manchus led Isolation to the Chinese, their country was called the "Middle Kingdom" and believed to be the cultural center of the universe for 2,000 years. If foreign states wished to trade with them, they would have to follow their customs. These rules also applies to special ports and paying tribute at sea. At the momennt, the Dutch were masters of the Indian Ocean trade. They accepted China’s rules. The Dutch paid tribute by gifts to the empror because of the required "kowtow ritual." Kowtow Ritual is when kneeling in front of the emperor and touching one’s head to the ground nine times. As a result, The Dutch and Chinese became partners. The Dutch returned home with porcelains, silk andtea. By 1800, tea would be 80% of shipments to Europe. Great Britain would liketo trade with China. But since they disagree with China’s trade restrictions, they were unable to trade. Lord George Macartney delivered a letter from King George III to Qian-long, in 1795. He asked for a better trade arrangement, where chinese family prepares for a wedding in the 1800s including the acceptance of British manufactured goods. Macartney refused the "kowtow ritual", and concluding Qian-long denied Britain’s request. China was clear that they don't need the British.
