Symptoms-Memories of the trauma coming back at any time. Usually in the form of flashbacks and/or nightmares.-Doing your best to avoid situations that remind you of the event. Large crowds make many who have PTSD uncomfortable.-The way you think about both yourself and others changes negatively. Relationships become harder to maintain and you begin to distrust everything.-Hyperarousal. You are constantly alert for danger. Difficulty paying attention or sleeping. Little things can set you off.

POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

CourseThere are four stages of PTSD: Outcry, Avoidance/Denial, Intrusions, and Work to Completion.Outcry: Emotions during this first stage can be very intense and overwhelming. Shock is heavy.Avoidance/Denial: Person tries to deny the trauma and return their lives to the way it was. Become very empty and withdrawn.Intrusions: Memories and thoughts about the trauma begin flooding back. People experience it again in their minds.Work to Completion: The trauma and its consequences are accepted and the person is able to face reality again.

Prevalence--7.8% of Americans are estimated to have PTSD at some point in their lives.--10.4% for women and 5%for men.--PTSD also affects a significant number of war veterans from various wars. PTSD makes it difficult for these veterans to reintegrate into society.

EtiologyPTSD is triggered by witnessing or experiencing a psychologicaly a traumatic event. Examples include war, physical/sexual abuse, or any event that brings on intense feelings of fear and helplessness. Those who cannot cope with the event experience PTSD.
