We categorize ourselves into to groups, if no one helps a person in trouble we tend to not want to get involved. Once someone helps we join too.

Social psychologists define the bystander effect as a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases in which individuals do not offer any means of help to a victim when other people are present.

Kitty Genovese was murdered because no one would want to help her to not get involved. They heard her cries for help but they turned the other way.

Genovese was a victim of the bystander effect if others would have helped her she might have not been murdered.
