Chemistry

Your Freezing-point depression describes the process in which adding a solute to a solvent decreases the freezing point of the solvent. Examples include salt in water, alcohol in water, or the mixing of two solids such as impurities in a finely powdered drug.

.

In general the more solute added per kilogram of solvent, the greater is the freezing point of depression and the lower is the freezing point. That is the freezing point of depression s directly proportional to the concentration of the solute particles.

The presence of a nonvolatile solute causes the boiling point of a solution to be raised in comparison with the boiling point of the pure solvent. The antifreeze is an example for this situation.

Osmotic pressure is the minimum pressure which needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of water across a semipermeable membrane. It is also defined as the measure of the tendency of a solution to take in water by osmosis.
