The apperance of anti-alcohol groups began to spring up. Ex: the Anti- Saloon League. Factory owners pushed for the ban of alcohol as well.

The state of Maine was the first state to pass a state wide prohibition law. Other states soon followed.

1846

The ratification of the 18th amendment happened on Jan. 16th. It prohibited the manufacture, sale, transport, import, or export of alcoholic beverages.

Volstead Act passed in 1920. Crime increased. Speakeasies and bootleggers became an urban industry. Gangsters like Al Capone made millions on illegal alcohol sales.

Ratification of the 21st amendment happened on Dec. 5th. It repealed the 18th amendment but it did not make alcohol legal everywhere.

Bootleggers had secret stills where they produced illegal liquor like Yak Yak Bourbon and Jackass Brandy.
