Key characters in this story include Yanek Gruner, Issac, Thomas, Fred, Uncle Moshe, Dad, and Amon Geoth. Yanek is the main character that is followed through the whole story. He becomes a very dynamic character who is thriving to survive in a place and time where death was everywhere.

Alan Gratz is a 43 year old, 2 time award winning Author. He has wrote numerous books including one of his more popular ones "Fantasy Baseball." In addition to writing books, Alan Gratz wrote plays.

magazine articals, and a few episodes of A&E's City Confidential, Alan has taught catapult-building to middle-schoolers, written more than 6,000 radio commercials, sold other authors books.

Prisoner B-3087

Issac is a young man in the Plaszow Concentration Camp he is one of the boys that Yanek is hiding with under the floorboards of the barracks.Thomas was the other young boy that was hiding with Issac and Yanek under the floor boards of the barracks, he was the youngest one at the age of 8.

Fred was Yaneks first friend that he had actually made since the Nazi occupation had began. Uncle Moshe seemed like a mean old man at the beginning of the book but he turns into this mentor for Yanek that helps him understand how to survive during the hardships that the nazi put them through.

Dad helped Yanek become a man during the beginning of the Nazi occupation but later was killed. Amon Geoth is the ruthless camp comandant at Plazsow, this man is responsible for thousands of jewish lives that he took himself.

As a Jewish boy in 1930s Poland, Yanek is at the mercy of the Nazis who have taken over. Everything he has, and everyone he loves, have been snatched brutally from him. And then Yanek himself is taken prisoner...his arm tattooed with the words PRISONER B-3087.

He is forced from one concentration camp to another, as World War II rages all around him. He encounters evil he could have never imagined, but also sees surprising glimpses of hope through the horror. He just barely escapes death, only to confront it again seconds later.
