Ms. Bennet is looking to find her daughters husbands. She makes sure that the girls meet Bingley, a wealthy young man. BIngley's friend, Darcy, is less charming but also very wealthy. The eldest, Jane, falls for Bingley while her younger sister, Elizabeth, evenually falls for Darcy. Darcey proves himself to be worthy of Elizabeth when he pays off the man who ran off with Elizabeth's sister to marry her in order for the family's reputation to be saved. Darcy and Elizabeth are married as well as Bingley and Jane.
Pride and Prejudice
During this time period, social status and reputation was of great importance. If not born into a wealthy family, one must try their best to marry into one. If a reputation of one person in a family was ruined, the whole family's reputation was ruined.
