Presidential Roles

Chief of State Refers to the President as the head of the government. He is the symbol of all people. In the United States, the President also rules over the government.

Chief of Party The president helps members of his political party get elected or appointed to office. The president campaigns for those members who have supported his policies. At the end of a term the president may campaign for reelection.

Chief ExecutiveThe President vested by the Constitution with broad exectuive powers. This power is used at home on domestic issues and also extends to foreign affairs. The exectuive power is limited, however, by our government's system of checks and balances.

Presidential Roles

Chief Diplomat The main authorof American foreign policy. Everything the President says and doesis closely followed, both at home and in other countries.

Chief Citizen The Presidentshould represent all of the people of the United States. Citizensexpect the President to work for their interests and provide moralleadership.

Chief Legislator The President shapes public policy. ThePresident may suggest, request, and insist that Congress enactlaws he believes are needed. Sometimes, Congress does not agreewith the President and decides against legislation.

Commander in ChiefThis power gives the President directand immediate control of the military.

Chief AdministratorThe President is in charge of the executivebranch of the federal government. This branch employs more than2.7 million civilians.
