Prephonetic

What is this?

What does it look like?

In these examples, we are able to see the child attempted to write words and draw pictures that correspond to the word. However, we are not able to make sense out of what they are writing.

Writing that bears no correspondence to speech sounds; literally, "before sound."

Prephonetic writing occurs during the emergent stage and typically consists of random scribbles, mock linear writing, or hieroglyphic-looking symbols.
