Prenatal Development

What did we do?.....................................................................................................................................................................................................

Physical DevelopmentMilestones

* Specific forms of fetal stimulation, such as reading aloud or playing classical music, are unlikely to have a long lasting impact on cognitive development because of child's constantly changing and experience, which override the impact of fetal stimulation (Berk, 2013).* Even though ordinary stimulation contributes to the functioning of sensory system, excessive input can be dangerous (Berk, 2013).

Prenatal Development

Language DevelopmentMilestone

* During the third trimester fetuses distinguish the tone and rhythm of different voices and sounds. * They show systematic hear rate changes in response to male versus a female speaker, to the mother's versus a stanger, to a stanger speaking their native language versus foreign language(Berk, 2013 p. 94)

* During the first trimester between 3 and 4 weeks the embryo has a length and weight about 1/4 inch (5mm). The embryo's "primitive brain and spinal cord appear, heart, musclels, ribs, backbone, and digestive tract begin to develop" (Berk, 2013).* At "5-8 weeks many external body structure (face, arms, legs, toes, fingers) and internal organs form" (Berk, 2013)

Cognitive DevelopmentMilestone

Maternal Factors* Exerise - Healthy, physically fit women, regular moderate exercise increase birth weight and a reduction in risk for certain complications, such as pregnancy induced maternal diabetes and high blood pressure (Berk, 2013).* Nutrition - A healthy diet results in maternal weight gain of 25 to 30 pounds helping ensure the health of mother and baby (Berk, 2013). Some strategies that family can use to influence their child's learning and development

* During the final three months the fetus gains more than 5 pounds and grow 7 inches. As it fills the uterus, it gradually moves less often" (Berk, 2013).
