Prader Willi Syndrome

There is no known cure for Prader Willi Syndrome. Children who have Prader Willi Syndrome can take growth hormone injections and sex hormone injections to help with the lack of or low hormones. Overall development of a child with PWS will be behind, slow, and in some may not develop at all.

Prader Willi Syndrom effects girls and boys the same as well as all races the same. The main cause for this syndrome is due to an abnormality in chromosone 15. This effects the hypothalamus which tells us when we are full.

Children who have Prader Willi Syndrome will do anything to get food. A child with this syndrome will get into a cabinet or refridgerator and eat whatever they can get their hands on. Parents and educators at times will have to lock the child out in order to keep them from eating themselves to death. If a child eats too much their stomach can actually explode.

Characteristics of Prader Willi Syndrome

Infants who have Prader Willi have low muscle tone. Infants with PWS due to the poor muscle tone also have a failure to thrive. The baby does not usually have very good eye contact or show enthusiasim for growth in development.
