[2015] Jenosh ThosePeople: Poverty in America

Poverty in America

America is not the only place affected by poverty. Other 3rd world countries have been severly affected by poverty, even more than the US. The poverty in America dosen't affect just us, but it can also have a global impact because poor housing and living conditions can cause disease and get other places sick. Also, many people form around the world immagrate to the US as a safe haven, but they sometimes fall under the poverty line because of a lack of good work and unsafe working conditions.

“… to bring good news to the poor… release to captives… sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free.” (Luke 4:18)

Map of Poverty in the US

Poverty has had a big impact on the US, affecting over 46 million Americans. Today, 15% of the USA (one in six Americans) are considered poor, which is the highest rate of poverty since 1993. This violates the dignity of work and the rights to workers because many people are working under wage, and are not earning a living. But, there are many organizations contributing and striving to lessen this problem, for example, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). Their goal is to "help low-income people participate in decisions that affect their lives, their families and communities."

Some of the things that we here in the US can do to help with worldwide poverty is that we can donate money to various charities. No matter how much money is given to a charity it all goes to those in need, non-profit organizations work in the same manner. People living below the poverty line can find it hard to provide food for themselves or their families, we can help with this by starting a canned food drive. Holy Family has done this in the past, and it has proved to be very successful in helping the poor.

Proposal to the Pope: Poverty is a large issue in the US and around the world. It affects many people and can often create problems that spread to many others affecting them as well. If something is done to help, these problems can be stopped, keeping people from harm.

"You shall open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land." (Deuteronomy 15:11)
