Poverty in Africa

Poverty in the 1950s was most apparent in the nation's urban centers. When the government tried to help against poverty it often made things worser. Urban renewal programs tried to eliminate poverty by tearing down slums and erecting new high rise buildings for poor residents. Many of the citizens that was left behind in the cities as others families fled to the suburbs were African Amer. The large number of African American inner city residents resulted largely from the migration of more than 3 million African Americans from the South to the North between 1940-1960.Not only African Amer. struggled with poverty, nearly 5 million Hispanics was in the same conditions. They worked for long hours and still struggled with poverty and hardships with only little pay, the conditions were unbearable.

Accomplishments

1959 - First poverty statistics were released.1964 - President Johnson declares the war on poverty.1965 - Welfare were not available for two parent families.1981 - Dramatic cuts were made to the foodstamp and welfare program.2007-10 - 9 million people were added to the definition of being in poverty during and post-recession.2012 - The poverty rate is 15.1%, with 46.2 million people in poverty, and 15 million of those are children.

The persistence of high poverty rates even as the federal government has spent much more fuels charges by conservatives that the federal government fought the war on poverty and poverty won. Some critics claim that federal efforts make poverty worse, and call for draconian spending cuts and radical changes in programs such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, WIC, Section8 etc. Some liberals also question the War on Poverty, arguing that it was underfunded or did too little to constrain corporations.
