POPPIESby Mya

Poppies During WW1 poppies were destroyed because of bombing on the battlefields. The bombings caused the poppies to stop growing for all four seasons. After the war the poppies began to grow again. According to reports over 2,500 poppies grew per square.

Poppies FactsPoppies are very popular on ANZAC Day because they blossomed on the Galipoli battle fields, they were the only flowers that grew during WW1. In Greek and Roman mythology, poppies were put on top of tombstones to symbolize eternal sleep. They also symbolize the blood of fallen soldiers.

This year the goal for Federation Square was to crochet, knit or fette 5000 poppies as part of 100th Annerversary commeration.

Not all poppies are red. They come in yellow, orange and other colours.

Poppies are also grown for their seeds, which are used for cooking and baking.
