[2015] Cullan Byrne (Walters): Pompeii

Pompeii (Continued some more)

Visual EvidencePompeii was hidden under pumice and volcanic ash until it was discovered in 1748. Since then, archeologist have found many artifacts to tell them about life in Pompeii. They have uncovered mosaics and murals, villas, bath houses, temples, ampitheatres, galeas, gladiuses, jewelry, money, and statues. Archeologists also know about Pompeii because of the writings of Pliny the Younger who wrote down what he saw from across the harbour as Mount Vesuvius erupted. Archeologists also found the remains of some of the citizens of Pompeii. They were able to inject plaster into the voids that the bodies made in the volcanic rock as they decayed.

ConflictPompeii saw lots of conflicts between different cultures who wanted to settle in the area. The Etruscans defeated the Greeks who then fought them and won the land back. Then the Samnites declared war and took over Pompeii. When the Romans came into the area, they conquered over the Samnites and colonized Pompeii. In 59 AD, there was a riot in the amphitheatre, between spectators from Pompeii and the town of Nuceria. They fought each other and the Emperor Nero banned games at Pompeii for ten years.Pompeii also saw conflict with lots of earthquakes, but the biggest one destroyed the city in 62 AD. They weren't even finished rebuilding Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. It was the biggest conflict in Pompeii and it caused the destruction of the whole city and killed most of the population.

Technological DevelopmentsThere were three developments that were used in daily life in Pompeii.Aqueducts were brick and cement archways that formed a passge for water. This sent running water to public bath houses, public fountains and private villas.Pompeii builders also used a hypocaust when building private homes and public bath houses. A hypocaust is an underfloor heating system using hot air.The streets of Pompeii were built to have a drainage system. The sidewalks were built above street level so people didn't have to walk in the dirty water. There were stones placed in the street for people to cross over that would still allow the wheels of carts to pass through.
