Figurative language or speech contains images. The writer or speaker describes something through the use of unusual comparisons, for effect, interest, and to make things clearer.

AlliterationAlliteration is the repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of words.

Metaphoris a figure of speech comparing two unlilke things without using "like" or "as"Simileis a figure of speech comparing two unlike things using "like" or "as"

Metera rhythmic pattern of stresses in a poem creates meter

onomatopoeiaThe use of words to imitate sounds. Bang, pop, hiss, and sizzle are examples.

assonancethe repitition of vowel sounds within words

BalladA poem that tells a story similar to a folk tale or legend and often has a repeated refrain

CaesuraA natural pause or break in a line of poetry

FootTwo or more syllables that together make up the smallest unit of rhythm in a poem
