Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. Many different organisms can cause it, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi.Pneumonia can range from mild to severe, and can even be deadly. ( severity depends on the type of organism causing pneumonia aswell as your age and underlying health.

Treatment for pneumonia depends on the type of pneumonia you have and how severe it is, and if you have other chronic diseases. The goals of treatment are to cure the infection and prevent complications. you may receive fluids and antibiotics in your veins, oxygen therapy, and possibly breathing treatments. ( American Lund Associations, 2015)

Exams and tests for pnuemonia mayinclude any or all of the following:Chest X-RayCulture of your sputum to look for the organism causing yoursymptomsCompete blood count to check white blood cell count; if high,this suggests bacterial infectionArterial blood gases to check how well you are oxygenatingyour bloodCAT scan of the chestPleural fluid culture if there is fluid in the space surroundingthe lungsCrackles are heard when listening to your chest with astethoscope. Other abnormal breathing sounds may also beheard through the stethoscope or via percussion (tapping onyour chest wall). text here

Prevention:Wash your handsfrequently!Especially after blowingyour nose, going to the bathroom, diapering, and beforeeating or preparing foods.Avoid contact with others that are sickCover your coughand cover your sneeze!Wear a mask when in dusty or moldy areas.Don't smoke!Tobacco damages your lung's ability to wardoff infection. Additionally, avoid others who do smoke.Being around smoke will cause your symptoms to become worse.
