[2014] hildurarnalds: Piranhas

Piranhas are carnivores that eat live prey and can also feed on insects, plants, and even their own kind. They basically eat everything that’s alive. Piranhas stay in groups and when one piranha bites the prey the rest of the group follows. They eat every meat that comes their way.

What do piranhas eat?

Because they hunt in groups they can eat large animals for example cows. They eat everything from humans to snails and other fishes. They don’t kill their prey first, they start eating it alive. Adult piranhas are known to even eat their own babies.

How do piranhas behave in a fish tank?

From the moment baby piranhas come into the world they are armed and dangerous. They live in groups that usually have about 20-30 fish. It helps them to live in groups because if someone would want to eat them they can defend themselves.

How do piranhas behave in the wild?

Piranhas

Piranha behavior changes with the size of the water area. Piranhas are shy fish, they don’t trust one another. When Piranhas are stuck together in a small fish tank they start to become paranoid. In other words they freak out and try to swim away from each other. So it is good to keep them in a big fish tank.

Piranhas have silver bodies with red patches, some types of the fish have red eyes and others have grey eyes. Piranhas are usually 14 to 26 cm long and weigh around 3.5 kilograms. Piranhas look like normal fish beside the fact that all piranhas have a single row of razor-sharp teeth in both jaws. Piranhas’ teeth are used to make tools and weapons by the people of South America. Piranha means “fish tooth” by the native people of the Amazon. Their jaw bone is so strong that it can crush a human hand in 5 – 10 seconds. They don´t look dangerous because they look like ordinary innocent fish.

Piranhas can only be found in the wild in South America and they have not been seen in other places of the world. Piranhas live in the Amazon, Guyana, Orinoco, São Francisco River, Paraguay River and in Parana River in South America. Piranhas have been around for 1.8 million years.
