Pinterest - Ben Silbermann

"What you collect says so much about who you are."

Ben Silbermann

Ben Silbermann was born in Des Moines, Iowa on July 14, 1982 to his parents Neil Silbermann and Jane Wang. As a child, he collected stamps and dried insects, and he pinned the insects onto cardboard. He attended Theodore Roosevelt High School and then went on to Yale University where he studied political science and medicine.

Following his graduation from Yale, he began working for Google by designing display ads. While working there, he began to admire their innovative spirit. He started to come up with ideas for Google, however, he was not an engineer for the company. Feeling hindered in his creativity, he left Google and  reconnected with a friend from college named Paul Sciarra and together they tried to create a start up business. They began making iPhone apps, specifically a shopping app called Tote. However, it failed because it had too many features and it was too difficult to ship items purchased through the app.

In November of 2009, Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp collectively began working on a new start up business idea, inspired by both Evan and Ben's love of collecting. They wanted to create a site on which users could make a collection of their interests on an "interactive pin-board format". They launched their first edition of Pinterest, however, they were slow to gain users. After 9 months, they only had 10,000 users. Many people did not like that Pinterest was not an app that provided realtime streams like Facebook or Twitter. Consequently, venture capitalists in Silicon Valley did not want to invest in their app. Recognizing their need to attract more users and create a better design or layout for Pinterest, Silbermann and his co-founders begn meeting with their fans to gain feedback from them. Addtionally, they created "Pin It Forward", which allowed people to share pinboards with one another. The team created dozens of new versions of the Pinterest screen until finally launching a new one in March of 2010. That design became very successful and now Pinterest is very popular around the world.

Ben Silbermann is the CEO of Pinterest, which is a photo bookmarking site that allows users to share and save a wide variety of images and ideas. As of June 2017, the site was valued at $12.3 billion.

Silbermann's current net worth is $1.2 billion. He is currently #1425 on the Forbes Billionaires 2019. He was listed as #12 on the Forbes "America's Richest Entrepreneurs Under 40" in 2016.

Silbermann is currently 37 years old and lives with his wife and two children in San Francisco, California.
