Diagram of Photosynthesis

A chemical called chlorophyll helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color.

BenchmarksSC.3.L.14.1 Describe structures in plants and their roles in food production, support, water and nutrient transport, and reproduction. (Also assesses SC.3.L.14.2 and SC.4.L.16.1.) SC.4.L.17.3 Trace the flow of energy from the Sun as it is transferred along the food chain through the producers to the consumers. (Also assesses SC.3.L.17.2 and SC.4.L.17.2.)

Look at Photosynthesis as an Equation!6H2O + 6CO2 --> C6H12O6+ 6O2Most of us don't speak chemicalese, so the above chemical equation translates as:six molecules of water plus six molecules of carbon dioxide produce one molecule of sugar plus six molecules of oxygen.

PhotosynthesisThe cycle of plants and how they make energy! The sun (light energy), water, and carbon dioxide are all absorbed by the plant. The plant then uses them to make glucose/sugar, which is the energy/food for the plant. Oxygen is also produced by the plant in this cycle, which then is let off into the air! Have you noticed how clean and pure the air feels when there are plants around? They are filling the air with oxygen!
