“ Cats are often drawn to ailurophobes… because cats loath being stared at…[so,] Because the ailurophobe doesn’t stare at the cat or try to pick it up, the cat feels at ease with the unfortunate individual and makes a beeline for his or her lap” (Jennifer Copley)

"Ailurophobia: An abnormal and persistent fear of cats which produces an undue anxiety reaction even though sufferers realize their fear is irrational. Sufferers of ailurophobia may fear not only the scratch or bite of a cat, but also the ‘ evil mystique’ of cats as depicted in Halloween folklore and such literary works as Edgar Allen Poe's ‘The Black Cat.’” (Definition of Ailurophobia).

Many infamous people have had ailurophobia including:Alexander the GreatGenghis KhanHitlerJulius CaesarMussolini

Symptoms: Intense fear, sweating, heart palpitations, nausea, dry mouth, tightness in the throat or chest, and the belief that cats are sneaky, and evil.

The most common cause of ailurophobia is a tramatic event in the past that had to do with a cat; either being biten or scratched or seeing someone else being fearful of cats.

Treatment is possible for ailurophobia. The best treatment is slowly exposing the person with ailurophobia to their fear: cats. The best way is to start with pictures, go on to videos, then look at a cat through the window, then pet fake fur. After those, the next step is being in the room with a cat on a leash or in a cage, and then finally in the room with a freely rooming cat.
