Phases of the Moon

The moon is at a 90 degree angle to the sun and the earth and we can only see the illuminated right half from the earth.

Only a sliver of the moon's right side is visible from the earth.

The moon is positioned between the sun and the earth and all three are in approximate alignment. The illuminated portion of the moon is invisble from the earth.
