Phases of the Moon

The moon has many different phases. It has phases because the sun's rays light up only certain parts of the moon creating crescent moons, half moons, and gibbous moons.

For example, a waxing gibbous moon is when the moon is almost completely lit up, while a crescent moon is when only a small portion of the moon is lit up.

The leading theory of the moon's origin is that a Mars-sized body collided with Earth about 4.5 billion years ago, and the resulting debris formed our natural satellite.

The moon's orbit is caused because of its orbit around the Earth, so that the sun lights up different part of the moon. It takes 27days, 7 hours, 43 minutes ad 11.6 seconds
