Phar Lap

Even some 70 years after his death, Phar Lap remains an enduring symbol of the Australian turf. A winner of 37 of his 51 starts, he started favorite in three successive Melbourne Cups, the only horse in the long history of Australia's most famous race accorded that distinction. In a unique feat in 1930, he won a race on each of the four days of the 1930 Flemington spring carnival, including the Melbourne Cup with 15 lb, more than weight-for-age.

Phar Lap was a champion Thoroughbred racehorse whose achievements captured the public's imagination during the early years of the Great Depression. Foaled i New Zealand, he was trained and raced in Australia by Harry Telford.

Phar Lap finished last in the first race and did not place in his next three races. He won his first race on 27 April 1929, the Maiden Juvenile Handicap at Rosehill, ridden by Jack Baker of Armidale, a 17-year-old apprentice. He didn't race for several months but was then entered in a series of races, in which he moved up in class. Phar Lap took second in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick on 14 September 1929 and the racing community started treating him with respect.

Did You Know? Phar Lap's heart weighs 6.35kg, which is significantly larger than an average horse heart of three to four kilograms.
