Perry's Theory
Duality - world is viewed dichotomously: good-bad, black-white. Learning is information exchange based upon referencing sources with the right answers; meaning makers believe that right answers exist for everything. Transition from duality to multiplicity occurs when cognitive dissonance occurs (Evans, Forney, Guido, Patton, & Renn, 2010).
Intellectual Development (Primary Modes of Meaning-Making)
Duality
Multiplicity
Multiplicity - honors diverse views when the right answers are not yet know.Transition from multiplicity to relativism occurs when evidence is required to support evidence (Evans, Forney, Guido, Patton, & Renn, 2010).
Relativism
Commitment in Relativism
Relativism - initiated by recognition of the need to support opinions; all opoinions no longer equally valid (Evans, Forney, Guido, Patton, & Renn, 2010). Relativism transitions to commitment in relativism.
Commitment in relativisim occurs when choices, decisions, and affirmations are made from the vantage point of relativism (Evans, Forney, Guido, Patton, & Renn, 2010).
