Group trends are atomic radii, electron affinity, ionization energy, non metallic character, and metallic character.Periodic trends of reactivity depend on their placement on the table. Ionization Energy is the energy required to remove and electron from an atom. Electronegativity is the ability of an atom of an element to attract electrons when the atom is in a compound. Atomic Radii is one half the distance between the nuclei of two atoms of the same element when the atoms are joined.

Johann Dobereiner January 1st 1829 proposed the Law of Triads: the middle element in certain triads had an atomic weight that was the average of the other two members. He began grouping elements based on similarities.Dmitri Mendeleev Janunary 1st 1829 ordered elements by atomic weights and properties. The table contained 17 columns, two partial periods with 7 elements in each and two nearly complete.Henry Moseley January 1st 1913 arranged elements by atomic numbers and not mass which removed some of the inconsistencies with Mendeleeves table.

Each element has a name. Many refer to a property of the element. Other elements are named for people. Some elements are named for places.


The periodic table is arranged by the elements atomic number. There are 118 elements in the table. Group 1 is the Alkali metals. Group 2 is the Alkaline Earth metals. Group 3-12 is the Transition Metals. Group 13 is the metalloids. Group 17 is the Halogens. Group 18 is the Noble Gases. The elements are classified in 3 groups Metals, Non-Metals, and Gases. Metals are located on the left, center, and lower parts of the table. Non-Metals are located at the top and right side including Hydrogen. Gaes are located on the far right column.
