"Anabolic steroids" are synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones. They promote the growth of skeletal muscle and strength, which is why athletes desire it so much. It can be administered via injection. Side effects include acne, blurred vision, cataracts or glaucoma, easy bruising, difficulty sleeping. High blood pressure, increased appetite, weight gain and increased growth of body hair.

Stimulants are taken orally, sniffed, smoked, and injected. They increase alertness, attention, and energy, as well as elevate blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration. Athletes may use stimulants to increase alertness, reduce, tiredness, and increase their competitiveness and aggressiveness. An example of a stimulant is cocaine. Side effects of abusing stimulants include irregularities in heartbeat, addiction, paranoia and even psychosis.
