This study requires participation in one 60 minute focus group. This focus group will take place on the Penn State Harrisburg campus. Participants will be asked to answer an anoynomous demographic questionaire upon arrival. During the focus group, participants will discuss and analyze two pieces of music and one piece of music with video accompaniment. Lyrics will be provided to focus group participants. Video recordings wil be taken to aid the researcher in analyzing the results of the focus group and identifying common themes.

The potential benefits to individual participants are increased political awareness, increased civic participation, increased critical consciousness and critical thinking skills, and an increase in critical media literacy. Potentinal benefits to others and to society include increased civic participation and a more informed citizenry with increased political awareness, critical consciousness, critical thinking skills, and media literacy.This research project presents minimal discomfort or risk. It is possible that participants will experience slight discomfort exploring and discussing opposing political ideology.

The purpose of this study is to determine the potential of politicially-oriented popular music to increase critical consciousness, to empower an individual and to affect social change

We are recruiting Penn State Students between the ages of 18 and 25 participate in a research study.
