Pearl Prynne

PearlPrynne

Pearl is the daughter of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. She is the result of an action of love, passion, and deceitfulness. Her mother acts like what she did was not a very big deal, in fact she shows it off. She wears the embroidery A, on her dress, in gold thread. She dresses Pearl in bright clothing as well. Pearl is a constant reminder of Hester’s actions. She inherited her mother’s beauty. Her personality is every bit as noticeable as her physical appearance. She is described as an intelligent, imaginative, and at times, nosey children. She often brings up the topic of the letter A and Arthur Dimmesdale, probably knowing that her mother doesn’t feel comfortable. At times it seems as if she is mocking her mother. She seems to have completely different personalities, from happy to serious to silent to anger. While Governor Bellingham somewhat likes her the other not so much. Pearl may have been the result of a sin but she does do some good. She is the symbol of hope, that life may be sucky but it’ll get better sooner or later.

Chapter 16 pg. 41: “Mother,” said little Pearl, “the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom.”
