Pearl Harbor - Molly

Pearl Harbor

December 7, 1941

The attack on Pearl Harbor: It started out as a normal Sunday. People were going about their normal lives, not knowing that in within few hours they were going to be attacked.

The United States War Department sends out an alert to the headquarters in Ohau telling them that there will be an attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. They use a commerical telegraph because the radio contact with Hawaii is temporarily broken. Delays prevent the message from the War Department from arriving at the headquarters in Oahu until noon (Hawaii time), four hours after the attack has started.

Early Morning - Part of a Japanese message reaches Washington. It is decoded around 9:00 A.M.

Approximately 10:00 A.M.Another Japanese message is intercepted. It instructs the Japanese embassy to deliver the message saying that they would be attacking at 1:00 P.M.(early in Pearl Harbor).

The Japanese attacked in three stages, Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3.

Stage 1: The Japanese attack all millitary instalations across the entire island.Stage 2: The Japanese zero in on specific targets. Stage 3: The Japanese destroy fuel storage tanks.

The Japanese were planning the attack on Hawaii for almost a year.
