Paulo Freire - (1921-1997)

“I didn’t understand anything because of my hunger. I wasn’t dumb. It wasn’t lack of interest. My social condition didn’t allow me to have an education. Experience showed me once again the relationship between social class and knowledge”

-Freire was born on September 19, 1921.-He grew up northeast of Brazil in poor conditions which influenced his work greatly.-While still in high school, he became a grammar teacher.-He got married to his wife, whom he met while teaching, in 1944 and the eventually had five children together.-In 1962, Freire began experimenting with the methods he had developed.-He was imprisoned in 1964 because he was considered a traitor to the country of Brazil.-In 1967 he wrote his first book and in 1968 he wrote his famous Pedagogy of the Oppressed.-Beginning in 1970, he worked as a special education teacher for The World Congress of Churches.-Freire received many awards for his accomplishments.-In 1997, Freire died at the age of 75 due to hear failure.

Educational Contributions

Freire had a tremendous impact on educational thought and practice.He believed education is both teachers and students learning, questioning, reflecting, and participating.His thoughts and ideas are based on the socio-economic aspects of the world.

Freire's Educational Theory

His theory broken into 8 factors:1. Theory of Value---Students should be aware they become subjects, not objects of the world.2. Theory of Knowledge---''Knowledge is a social construct (2001)''.3. Theory of Human Nature---People are limited by not thinking critically. The elite think they are inferior and the poor believe they will always be oppressed.4. Theory of Learning---Students must use their previous knowledge to form new knowledge.5. Theory of Transmission---Teachers must understand their students to help make learning meaningful to them.6. Theory of Society---While not intentional, schools often result in the oppression of the less privileged.7. Theory of Opportunity---He wanted to provide opportunity to the poor and oppressed, especially in Brazil.8. Theory of Consensus---Disagreement is normal and everyone's opinions should be accepted.
