Paul Cezanne

Paul Cezanne: The Basics-He was born in Provence, France, on January 19, 1839-he attended the Collège Bourbon and befriended Émile Zola-He studied law at the University of Aix while also attending the School of Design-he went to Paris in 1861, but his rejection from the École des Beaux-Arts drove him home-he was greatly inspired by Diego Velázquez and Caravaggio-he went back to Paris, where he met Monet and Pissarro -he came back to Aix and began to paint in earnest, with his style changing with his moods-he worked with impressionists and developed an interest in nature, but he himself was more Post-Impressionist -his work spurred Cubism

Cezanne’s “Well, Millstone and Cistern Under Trees”, shown above, is a Post Impressionist piece with subtle hints of the coming Cubism movement of the 20th century. This painting uses contrast in the dark tree trunks against the bright yellow background and line in the curving cistern and bold branches. The painting’s composition is sophisticated, with the cistern just slightly off-center and supported by brightly colored foliage and trees. The color scheme is light overall, focused on green and yellow, but balanced by well-placed dark areas.

“I could paint for a hundred years, a thousand years without stopping and I would still feel as though I knew nothing.” – Paul Cézanne
