[2014] Breck Paschal: Paul Cezanne

Paul Cezanne was born in the town of Aix-en-Provence in 1839. He passed away on the 22nd of October in 1906.

Cezanne was a post-impressionist painter. Impressionist painting seeks to re-create the artist's or viewer's general impression of a scene. This is one of his paintings, "Mont-Sainte-Victoire".

This piece is called, "House and Trees". Cezanne started to practice cubism at the start of the 20th century. Cubism is the use of simple geometric shapes, and interlocking planes.

Paul was born son of a wealthy banker, who wanted him to go into law rather than proceed into a art career. Paul applied for a art school in france and was accepted, but wanted to please his father, so he applied for law school and was denied. This is Paul Cezanne's self portrait which was painted in 1872.

Many of Cezanne's early works were dark hued and heavy pigmented. After meeting another french impressionest in France, Cezanne shifted into using brighter colors and painting landscapes. This painting is called,"The Gulf of Marseille Seen from L'Estaque". It was painted in 1885.

On October 15, 1906, Cezanne caught a cold while painting outdoors, during a heavy rainstorm. After catching pneumonia, Paul Cezanne died on October 22, 1906. By the time of his death, Cezanne had attained the status of a legendary figure. This painting is called, "Still life with skull" and was painted in 1898.
