This is an example of a first derivative taken. You multiply the exponent by the constant in front of the variable and subtract 1 from the exponent.

When you take a derivative geometrically you are using it's slope. When you graph a derivative, you graph the point of it's slope values."The Derivative." SOSmath.com. N.p., 1990. Web. 11 Feb. 2015.

You can also take second derivatives. This is where you just derive the first derivative using the same method you used for the original function.

You can take 3rd derivatives too!

The derivative of just an integer with no varibale next to it is always zero.
