Paper Pollution

The pulp and paper industry has an enormous influence on the environment.Pulp mills contribute to air, water, and land pollution, as well as deforestation.Discarded paper is a major component of landfill sites.Paper recycling can be a source of pollution due to sludge produced during de-inking.Pulp and paper is the 3rd largest industrial polluter.

Responsible pulp and paper operations can bring many benefits to forests, local economics and people, particuly in rural areas.Unstainable pulp and paper operations have contributed to conversion of high conservation value forest, illegal harvesting, human rights and social conflicts, and irresponsible plantation development.

100 Million kg of toxic pollution each year is caused by the paper and pulp industry.Air emissions from hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide cause rancid odor.Air emissions from carbon momoxide, ammonia, nitrogen oxide, mercury, nitrates, methanol, benzene, and chloroform also cause odor and chemicals to dispurse into the atmosphere.

Recycled paper made from 100% recycled paper fibers does not require much bleaching and can be easily done with an oxygen-based process. To try and live at a sustainable level on Earth, Americans must reduce their average consumption by 65% to 80%. Businesses and organizations can reduce our overall use and waste of paper. Using less decreases pollution and saves money.
