Wilder said that Our Town was "an attempt to find a value above all price for the smallest events of our daily lives."
“EMILY: "Does anyone ever realize life while they live it...every, every minute?"
“People are meant to go through life two by two. ’Tain’t natural to be lonesome.”
“Yes, now you know. Now you know! That's what it was to be alive. To move about in a cloud of ignorance; to go up and down trampling on the feelings of those...of those about you. To spend and waste time as though you had a million years. To be always at the mercy of one self-centered passion, or another. Now you know — that's the happy existence you wanted to go back to. Ignorance and blindness.”
I think what Wilder is trying to express in his play "Our Town" is that we all need to slow down in life. I am always looking at what is next in life. By always looking ahead and not enjoying today, I miss out on a lot of things that are going on around me. Life is shorter then any of us can imagine, we need to take a deep breath and look at the lives around us. I need to not take my loved ones for granted because time is not always promised.
