Organic Compost

Compostingby Bobby PatchAJ Sharpe And Shane Palmieri

Question 4 There are many possible challenges that we have to overcome related to West Genesee Middle School composting. For one, people might not be willing to spend the money for the supplies to compost. To solve this, we can make composting a student funded/runned club. Another issue is some people would be unenthusiastic. We can make a competition between W and G about who can compost more. There would be two bins, one for W and one for G. Maybe there could be prizes for the winning team too. Of course, we need somewhere to put all this compost. We can make a garden during the summertime. Not to mention the funds that could be made selling the food produced, but this would vastly improve our school’s sustainability too. We can solve the problems with composting at WGMS. -By Everyone

Question 3 - CompostingAlthough food waste is a major problem, composting at West Genesee Middle School is a way to solve it. Composting is easy to start, provides lots of great fertilizer, and lowers the amount of your food that’s being wasted (Advantages of a Compost Pile). Composting is when you put your food waste together in a bin/pile. The pile decomposes naturally making good fertilizer for plants or gardens. It can save TONS of solid food from being wasted. Composting is our proposition for the solution of food waste at WGMS. We know this will work because a school has already done it before. In 2014 a school called North Coffee Elementary began a program increasing students awareness of composting, and reducing solid food waste produced by the school (North Coffee Elementary Reduces Waste Through Composting). With improved budget in 2015, the Coffee County weighed the food waste the week before starting composting and the week after starting it. “The results showed that they saved over 250 pounds of food from entering a landfill. This is over 10,000 pounds of solid waste that could be saved in one school year by one school¨ (North Coffee Elementary Reduces Waste Through Composting). The fact that this is an elementary school probably means that WGMS has more or equal the amount of its students. If we can save over 10,000 pounds of solid food waste a year, that would be astounding. Composting can overcome the worldwide dilemma of food waste at WGMS.-By Bobby Patch

Question 2 Solid food waste is a problem at West Genesee Middle School. If 5% less food is wasted more than 4 million Americans will get fed . 2010 was the year Americans wasted 33.8 million tons of food. In one year over 115 billion pounds of food is wasted. We waste 40% of food. We have become a society that throws everything away. In landfills, organic waste is the second highest component (Atlas). Some kinds of food waste we can’t compost. You can save money and stop greenhouse gas emissions by keeping food you can eat and avoid throwing it out. Some other stuff is wasted when food is prepared, stored, and transported. In addition, in schools, when you waste food, the kids are not getting the nutritional benefit (Food Waste). If we reduce food waste at WGMS, it could make the school greener.- By Shane Palmieri
