OPSPARC 2017 Asclepius - Thermography

In space, Thermography is used for detecting anomalies, such as voids, cracks, and delamination, in composite and metallic structures. NASA uses thermography for planet structure and geology.My device, Ascelpius uses thermography technology to treat snake bites and can also be extended to treat insect bitesAsclepius is based on non-contact thermography technology and infrared imaging. Depending on the temperature of the snake-bite location the software in the device, determines whether the bite was venomous, the severity of the bite, and the type of venom injected.Non-contact thermography, is the field of thermography that obtains indications from infrared images of the human body. It is sometimes referred to as medical infrared imaging or tele-thermology.Thermography is used to determine areas of the body that have an injury. It is commonly used by sports physicians and veterinarians to determine areas of the body that have inflammation.Infrared scanning is a nondestructive technique which can be performed while the equipment is operating. Portable thermal imaging measurement systems provide images that can be stored on video recorders.Similarly, Asclepius uses aspects from infrared scanning, thermal imaging, and thermography technology in order to detect a bite.

What is NASA Spinoff Technology?NASA Spinoff Technologies are ideas originally developed by NASA that have been changed to work here on Earth. Most NASA Spinoff Technologies are used for health purposes, geography, and just plain entertainment!

It is non-contact, so there could be some inaccurate informationThere was a lot of criteria involved in making the new Spinoff. I believe that the criteria that was most difficult to meet was finding out the similarities and differences between various types of venom.As stated in my video, I had to interview a couple of physicians to get information about the heat levels for different types of toxin/venoms.

To develop the conceptual solution, I used the standard scientific process.The steps I took are as follows:1. Understand the severity of the problem. Is it significant enough to spend time and energy to research a solution2. Research current solutions, impact of snake bite venom on human bodies and use ofthermographic images for medical diagnosis. Specifically,a. History and current solutions that are used to solve the issue.b. Changes in a person's body due to snake bites. Temperature, blood pressure, skin conditions,nervous system impact, cause of death and muscle damage.c. Types of venoms injected by different types of venomous snakes. d. Understand current use of thermography to diagnose muscle and bone inflammation in animals.e. Understand the relationship between venoms and temperature of affected area.3. Researched best user interface for the device for portability, ease of use and variety of information4. Research yielded following findings:a. identified new technologies that can help with the gaps in today's solutions,b. Eliminated solutions that does not solve the current problem 5. Established hypothesis that a tool can be developed, if, based on researcha. There is a correlation between the temperature of bite are and venomb. There is a correlation between temperature and type of venom, i.e. cytotoxin vs neurotoxinc. There is a correlation between temperature of the bite area and time elapsed since the bite,6. Ran early experimentsDesigned the device interface and created prototype using laser wood cutter.

Solution Development and Future Plans:My effort was a concept solution. Subsequent actions in my plan are as follows.- Conduct further experiments in labs to analyze relations between images /venoms and confirmmy conclusion- Complete my programming interface using the Arduino microcontroller, which takes an image asinput and outputs results on a scale, depending on the user selection.- Perform field tests and work with first responders/EMTs to confirm the ease of use of the deviceand determine the time saved
