Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 on a farm in Kosciusko. Oprah was originally born Orpah Gale Winfrey but as an infant her name was chnaged to Oprah. Oprah was a very smart child. When she was in kindergarten she wrote a note to her teacher and asked to be moved to the first grade. The next day Oprah was moved to the next grade. Oprah was sexually abused by an older cousin from the ages 9-14 years old. She didn't talk openly about it until the year 1991. When she finally admitted that at firdst she took blame for the abuse but she realized that she was not responsible. When Oprah was 13 she ran away from home and was sent to a juvenile detention home. When Oprah was 14 she was on her own. She was raped and ended up getting pregnant with a baby boy. Bute he died after she gave birth. Oprah then moved to Tennessee to live with her father who offered her a wonderful lifestyle and made she did what she was supposed to do. Her father raised receiving whoopings and harmful chastisement as punishment for wrong doings.

When Oprah was young her mother wouldnt buy her new glasses because because she couldnt afford them so she faked a robbery at her house and claimed that she was knocked unconscious, breaking her old glasses. When Oprah had ran away from home she approached Aretha Franklin's limousine and told her that she was a motherless and homeless child. Aretha then gave her one hundred dollars. In 1977 Oprah began to gain weight and she realized that her use of food as a stress reliever was because of the abuse she endured as a child. Oprah said, "My greatest failure was in believing that the weight issue was just about weight."

Because of memories of childhood abuse Oprah testified before a U.S Senate Judiciary Committee on behalf of a National Child Protection Act. And in 1993 President Clinton signed the "Oprah Bill. "

Oprah was the first black person to win Mashville's miss fire prevention title. And later that year she was named miss Black Tennessee. At the age of 19, Oprah was hired by WTVF-TV, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, as a repoter and anchor. In 1986 Oprah developed her own company known as Harpo productions. And that same year she was given the National Organization for Women Achievement Award. Oprah's lawyer said, "Because of our economic status and Oprah's other talents, we're going to bring things to thr screen that no one else will be able to do... she can develop or buy somethinhg that no one else think is remotely valuable and make it popular." In 1987 Oprah set up a scholarship program for $75,000, she said,"My mission is to use this position,power and money to create opportunities for other peopel. '

Oprah has been named "The most powerful woman in the world." In the beginning of 2003 Oprah led the construction of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for girls. In 2005 the academy opened, It was predicted to fail because of lawsuits in African, But those problems were resolved. Oprah helped campaign vigorously for Barack Obama. She slso encouraged her fans and viewers to vote for him. In 2013 President Obama awarded the nation's highest civilion honor, the presidentsl medal of freedom. The final broadcast of the Oprah Winfrey show was on May 25, 2011 after 24 seasons and 5,000 broadcast.
