How to Solve:

To find the sum of two rational numbers:Ex: 6 1/2 + -2Using a number line, place the tail of an arrow at -2 and count 6 and 1/2 units to the right to arrive at 4 1/2 which is the sum of 6 1/2 and -2.To find the difference of two rational numbers:Ex: 6 1/2 - 2Rewrite the difference as a sum 6 1/2 + (-2) and solve the same as above. You will arrive at the sum of 4 1/2 again.

A rational number is a number that can be made by dividing two integers.

The rules for adding and subtracting integers apply to all rational numbers.
