Official Languages Act

The Official Languages Act

What is the Official Languages Act?-The Official Languages Act is a Canadian law that came into force on September 9, 1969, which gives French and English equal status in the government of Canada. This makes them "official" languages, having preferred status in law over all other languages.

The purpose of the Official Languages Act:-is to ensure respect for English and French and ensure equality of status and equal rights and privileges as to their use in federal institutions- support the development of English and French linguistic minority communities-and advance the equal status and use of English and French.

The Official Languages Act is significant because it ensured that federal government institutions would communicate and provide services in both English and French so that Canadian citizens can comfortably speak in the official language of their choice.
