Of Mice and MenDreams

A theme of the book is having dreams. George, Lennie, and Candy all want to get a farm and be their own 'masters’. The great depression is hard but their dream might come true.

Definition of ThemeTheme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.

The Great Depression It started in 1929 and ended in 1939. A whole ten years of poverty and market crashes. People lost their jobs and their houses. Life was hard. And many people had to move from place to place to stay alive. Of Mice and Men was published in 1939 by John Steinbeck. He really captured the migrant workers life and how they struggled.

Crooks was an interesting character. He was a black man that had a crooked back. Lennie and Candy told him that they were going to get a farm. Crooks didn't believe them because that's what everyone wanted and it never happened. But then he saw that there might be a chance. So he asked if they ever needed someone to do odd jobs he would be more than happy to come. He also had a dream, but it is hard to dream because no one liked black people. There was still a lot of persecution for them.

Lennie was obssed with rabbits. He loved to pet them and he wanted to tend the rabbits when they got their dream ranch. It was Lennie's dream to tend the rabbits.

George loved Lennie. And he took great car of him. But when he needed to shoot Lennie. When he pulled that trigger his dreams died with Lennie.

After everything that happened. After getting their hopes up real high. Their dreams were crushed. it was no ones fault. It just happened. Dreams are crushed and people died. That must have been one bad day.
