By Cynthia Kechichian

Obesity

- Obesity in Australia has more than doubled within the past 20 years- Fourteen million Australians are obese or overweight- Obesity has become the single biggest threat to public health- If weight gain continues at current levels, 2025, close to 80% of all Australian adults and a third of all children will be overweight or obese.

What is Obesity?Obesity means having too much body fat. It is being too overweight and is unhealthy. Some people say it as being 20 percent over the normal body weight.

Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories from food that he or she burns. Our bodies need calories to sustain life and be physically active, but to maintain your weight we need to balance the energy we eat. When a person eats more calories that he or she burns, the energy balance is tipped towards the weight gain and obesity.
