OBESITY

Obesity is caused when energy input as a result of eating is greater than energy used. Extra fat, carbohydrate, protein or alcohol can be converted into body fat. This does not necessarily mean that the person eats a lot. Surveys have shown that many obese people eat no more than thin people. Other factors such as little physical exercise may be important. There are exceptions. One man who weighed amount 356kg (57 stone) used to eat 15 chickens at a time

The amount of excess food needed to produce obesity may be relatively small. Over time regular small excesses accumulate and cause obesity. Apart from quantity of food, the nature of the food may also be a factor. High energy foods such as carbohydrates and fats are more likely to cause problems.

Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.[2] Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive food energy intake, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century.[8]

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in India in the 21st century, with morbid obesity affecting 5% of the country's population.[1] India is following a trend of other developing countries that are steadily becoming more obese. Unhealthy, processed food has become much more accessible following India's continued integration in global food markets. While studying 22 different SNPs near to MC4R gene, scientists have identified a SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) named rs12970134 to be mostly associated with waist circumference.[2]
