There are 3 educational options one could take to become a registered nurse...High school diploma (or equivalent is required) 1. Obtain a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)- Offers best career opportunities & salary- Takes 4 years to complete (unless accelerated program)- Costs roughly $102, 352 for 4 years at a public institution 2. Obtain an Associates Degree in Nursing (ASN)- Takes 2-3 years to complete- Costs less than BSN at $5100 for 2 years at a community college3. Diploma of Nursing- 2 years or less- flexible work schedule- Costs roughly $5000No graduate, post-graduate education, pre-entrance exams, or research required.

Certifications, Licentures, and National Exams:

"NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure EXamination-Registered Nurse). All Boards of Nursing in states and territories of the United States require candidates to pass this exam for licensure as a Registered Nurse" (How to Become a Registered Nurse, 2013).• NCLEX-RN costs $200• 74.41% pass rate for all candidates • 84.28% for first-time, US educated candidates

Career Settings:

- General and Government Hospitals- Physician Offices- Home Healthcare Companies- Nursing Care Facilities- Universities- Community Centers- Schools- Correctional Facilities Does not change job settings frequently or work in several job settings simultaneously,

Job Placement:

- Held 2.7 Million Jobs in 2012- Job Growth of 19% 2012-2022 (average is 11% for all occupations)- Demand increasing as average of US population increases- Unemployment Rate of 2.0%

Salary:

- Entry level salary varies but averages about $45,000- Peak Salary is roughly $100,000- Median Salary of $65,470- San Jose, California pays the highest salary - Raises are based on hours worked, typically receive a small raise every year

Career Advancements:

- Very little advancement opportunities except becoming a head nurse (more managerial duties & may require graduate degree)- Average Retirement Age of 55- 30-35 years is the typical length someone remains in the career

Continued Education:

- Every state has its own requirements to license renewnal (typically contact hours)- In NJ registered nurses are required to do 30 contact hours every 2 years- Contact hours can be gained through classroom learning and online sites (often free)

Conclusions:

I believe people should strongly consider a career in nursing. The demand for nurses is incredible and only growing stronger. If one can get over the physical and emotion tax the job entails then it is a perfect profession. There is also very little costs in becoming a registered nurse.
