Time ' Place

Number the Stars was inspired by Lowry's friend Annelise who grew up in Denmark during World War II.Annelise remembered being cold and wearing mittens at night. She also remembered the high, shiny boots of the Nazi soldiers.

The story takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1943.Adolph Hitler believed that the Germans were the "master" race and wanted to wipe out Jews as well as Gypsies, the elderly, mentally handicapped people, and people with epilepsy . At the time of the novel, around 8,000 Jews lived in Denmark. The Danish people formed the Danish Resistance, helping about 7,000 Danish Jews to freedom in Sweden.

"The Danish people were the only entire nation of people in the world who heard the splash and the cry and did not... turn away from disaster."
