Nitrogen Family

Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Arsenic (As), Antimony (Sb), and Bismuth (Bi)

Nitrogen family elements have 5 valence electrons

•The Nitrogen family has three different types of elements!-Nitrogen & phosphorus: nonmetals. -Arsenic & antimony: metalloids. -Bismuth: metal. •As you move down the Nitrogen family: -Atomic radius increases-Ionic radius increases-Ionization energy decreases -Electronegativity decreases.

Nitrogen is the 5th most abundant element in the universe. It is used in pharmacological drugs, computers, xrays.

Arsenic is found in mispickel. It is used for wood preservation, treatment of cancer, and insecticides.

Antimony is Found in stibnite and in valentinite . It is not abundant, but is found in over 100 mineral species.

Phosphorus is found most often in phosphate rock. It is used in flares, safety matches, fertilizers

Bismuth is found in ores called galena or lead sulfide. It is used in pharmaceuticals and chemicalsAntimony is found in stibnite and in valentinite. It is used with other metals to lower their boiling point.
