Nigeria

Great Britan wanted Nigeria for its resources that they could use in production such as palm kernals, tin, cotton, cocoa, and palm oil. They later shipped 3.5 million Nigerians to the Americas (30% of all slaves)

Why were the British interested in controlling Nigera?

How did the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885 affect Nigeria?

How did Nigerians resist European control?

The Nigerians first fought back, but didn't last long against Britan's superior technological advancements. after they were colonized, they led riots, like the 1929 Aba Women's Revolt.

The Berlin Conference made it legal for Great Britan to colonize the territory of Nigeria. The colonization led to things such as slave trade.

They came and were overbearing and we were ordered to carry their clothes and bundles. In fact, the treatment was intolerable. We thought it best to fight and die rather than bear it. There was much bitterness because so many of our cattle were branded and taken away from us; we had no property, nothing we could call our own. We said, "It is not good living under such conditions; death would be better—let us fight." We knew that we had very little chance because their weapons were so much superior to ours. But we meant to fight to the last, feeling that even if we could not beat them we might at least kill a few of them and so have some sort of revenge.(Ndansi Kumalo)
