Nicolaus Copernicus

-Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Torun, Poland on February 19, 1491.-His interest for astronomy was ignited when he attended the University of Cracow which offered mathematics, astronomy, and astrology.-Following his uncle's footsteps, Copernicus went to the University of Bologna where he was exposed to astronomy even more.-He left the University of Bologna and studied medicine in the University of Padua.-Copernicus began working with astronomy on his own after two years at the University of Padua, but he had not stayed at any of the universities long enough to earn a degree in any of the subjects he studied.-He began spreading his idea of a heliocentric system around 1514.-Copernicus finally published his idea in 1543.-Nicolaus Copernicus died in Frombork, Poland May 24, 1543.

Nicolaus Copernicus is considered the founder of modern astronomy. Although not everyone was fond of Copernicus' heliocentric system, it was later proven correct.He wrote a book called On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres about his theory.Copernicus was truly a Renaissance person because of all his studies.

Lasting Impact

The Copernican Theory is the basis of modern astronomy.
