How was it founded?
New Jersey as one of the 13 colonies, was founded along the western bank of the Hudson originally by the Duke of York. It was part of New York, but Duke's territory began to be too much for him, so he gave his 2 friends half of his land.

John Berkeley and George Carteret were the two friends the Duke of York gave half of the land to.
